Understand uric acid and you understand gout.

What is uric acid, and why this one number decides your gout risk

Uric acid is the end product of purine breakdown. The body makes ~700 mg/day; two thirds leave via the kidneys.

Normal range

  • Men: 210–420 µmol/L (3.5–7 mg/dL)
  • Women: 150–360 µmol/L (2.5–6 mg/dL)

Why it rises

Poor kidney clearance (90%): genetics, obesity, diuretics, beer, dehydration. Overproduction (10%): purine-rich food, fructose.

Beyond gout

Kidney stones, chronic kidney disease, hypertension, pre-diabetes.

Targets

Under 360 µmol/L with gout; under 300 with tophi. Test every 2–4 weeks while adjusting treatment, then every 3 months.
